Sandown Park Racecourse

In the 19th century racing was staged at Hampton in the Sunbury-on-Thames area of London, although the course was not enclosed which made it difficult to control and even more difficult to make it pay. The Jockey Club were reluctant to allow the course to continue once safety became an issue, opening up the chance for other courses in the area to develop. Two such courses were Hurst Park and Kempton Park, but arguably the most successful of them all was Sandown Park. The first meeting to take place on this closed park course, where an admission charge of half a crown was made, was on Thursday 22nd April 1875. The opening race, the Trial Stakes, was won by Mr T Smith’s Sivori, with the full result shown below. Although the crowd was lower than had been anticipated because of inclement weather, this did not deter Hwfa Williams, Sir Wilfred Brett and General Owen Williams from celebrating the realisation of their dream to create a magnificent, enclosed course on the outskirts of London. They even constructed a Royal Box for the use of the Prince of Wales. The ever ambitious Hwfa Williams sought to expand interest in Sandown when he invited the Household Brigade to host a meeting in 1876. The first Eclipse Stakes, a £10,000 race supported by Leopold de Rothschild, was run in 1886 when won by Bendigo, beating the Derby winner St Gatien. At this time the Derby was only worth £4,600, which indicates the importance of the Eclipse Stakes. In 1887 the Prince of Wales won the Grand Military Gold Cup with Hohenlinden, while in 1900 Diamond Jubilee provided the Prince of Wales with another Eclipse success. Racing ceased between 1914 and 1918 during the First World War when the ground was used for agricultural purposes, and closed again between 1939 and 1945 when used as a training ground for the Welsh Guards. Sandown became famous in 1947 as the first racecourse to have a race shown live on television. The course closed in 1972 for refurbishment and rebuilding work immediately after Brigadier Gerard triumphed in the Eclipse Stakes, but reopened in 1973. The course launched the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1957 and the Tingle Creek Chase, named after the speedy chaser who won at Sandown many times in the 1970s. The Queen Mother and Lord Oaksey made frequent visits to the course and hinted that this was their favourite course. In the same way that many Aintree fences are known the world over, so the group of railway fences and the Pond fence have built up a similar reputation. Currently the course hosts 26 fixtures annually.
